We did a mock constitutional convention for my 8th grade US history class, in which we voted on elements of the constitution before our teacher told us what the actual decision was. My only distinct memory from this is that my class voted unanimously against an electoral college, and the genuine shock in the room when we learned that that was an ongoing element of presidential elections has stayed with me ever since

...okay I hate to tell you John, but by international standards the Democratic party is centre-right, and the Republican party borders on fascist. Liberalism is not leftism, it is centrism. Familiarize yourselves with political theory, America. Your lack of a viable left-wing is one of the biggest barriers in your democracy. It's not that he is wrong in describing America as naturally centre-right, but that he is correct and that is part of the problem.
Surgé Land
Surgé Land 5 gün əvvəl
@Prashant Wason That's not really the case everywhere. The only centre-left candidates, like Bernie Sanders, Ilhan Omar, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are slammed as extremists, despite being fairly moderate by international standards. Maybe in certain blue states. Though, ultimately it's irrelevant. A centre-left option only having centre-right to far -right options will still yield the same result, and my suggestion for a viable left wing in the US still remains.
Prashant Wason

This analysis misses a key nuance. The American electorate as a whole is pretty center left. It's the political parties who are all right wing.

I think the problem with the USA is, that far too many people believe the tale they're being told from birth: that the USA is the greatest country on earth. Believing that, makes it less likely to see anything wrong. This can even be seen with Liberals. Just look at Stephen Colbert - I think he is great and I love his show, but I often have to cringe when he says stuff like "the leader of the free world" (meaning the US president) or "the world's greatest democracy" (meaning the USA's). When not even people like him question the greatness of the USA, then no proper change will ever occur. And frankly, I don't only deny that the USA is the greatest democracy, I'd even claim it's not a democracy at all.
tajj7
tajj7 5 gün əvvəl
Yeh I mean honestly for a western democracy its pretty shit at everything, shit healthcare that costs a fortune, rigged court system, flawed democratic system, massive problem with gun violence, massive problem with drugs, absurdly expensive higher education, absurdly bloated military budget, huge divide between rich and poor, fundamentally poor social justice, huge racial problems, an awful police force, poor standards of education, a crumbling infrastructure system, honestly the list goes on and on. It's actually just a very bad country, it has a lot of money sure, but it scores terribly in pretty much every metric going. Canada, Japan, France, Germany, the UK, Denmark, Sweden, countries like this kick its arse in pretty much every area. The sad thing though is most Americans like you say are so brainwashed they don't realise how much better their politicians should be doing for them and how badly off they are. They don't even get good amounts of holidays or simple things like proper maternity leave.
Marina E
Marina E 6 gün əvvəl
@Joj Benedoot Yes, I know, but that's my point. First of all, why is the term "Free World" still used? This came up during the cold war to distinguish between the USA&allies and communist countries. So who, according to Colbert, IS the "Free World" and why is the USA it's leader? Is it democracies that are "free"? If yes, then like I wrote above, I would dispute that the USA even is part of this group, let alone their leader. If you look at how democracies around the world work, you will see that the system in the USA is a joke. Not that the systems elsewhere are perfect, there is always a lot of room to improve.
Joj Benedoot
Joj Benedoot 6 gün əvvəl
To be fair to Colbert, "leader of the free world" is largely a reference to the power and influence of the US, not necessarily its moral greatness

It's imperative Dems vote for the Georgia senate run-off election in December! Register to vote, and vote early! Get the Senate, pass reform bills, expand the SC by two seats. Pass a federal election act to prevent the garbage we just went through. Pass a "Truth in advertising, broadcasting, and publishing" bill that makes advertisers, broadcasters, and publishers liable to large fines if they knowingly publish false information and refuse to retract when confronted with proof that said information is false. Gain control of the Senate, gain control of the SC, put in safeties to the electoral process, and neutralize Fox News, NewsMax. Breitbart in one fell sweep.

Anyone have some more insight on this? Is the US not center right when compared to the rest of the world? I know conservatives here in the states would see democrats as super liberal or "socialists" and all that but Democrats are still kind of conservative here compared to other countries. So, I figured Romney was using that world context view (although misconstruing it to fit his goal) to make it sound like the US is a mostly "American conservative" nation, if that makes sense. What would the US lean when compared to the rest of the world?

quite ''terrifying'' to give such a liberty to ppl as a choice, giving only them the responsibility & say over that... from a resource to utilise & rule over it as you please, it becomes the main force to indicate the direction you have to follow or at least to consider and address. it's like a shift of power to remind that a government position is a servitude to a country & its people to ensure the ppl's wellbeing, not the country serving your personal needs as a resource being used & bent as you please... as long it makes you happy & is up to your temper tantrums, mood swings & fad interests of who & what you like / don't like. you don't serve only your ideas, you are to work & stand for the ideas your ppl & country want to see as well, even when it goes against your convictions, failing to reason & explain your side... you're there to listen and serve the needs & opinion of your country - you haven't been elected to be a dictator. suck it up & if you can't - you're in a wrong position of an execution. ''terrible'' when ppl want to keep the government responsible & accountable for the decisions that go against the majority of a nation, that is being treated as non-existent in any importance, just remembered & approached as a resource of a sheep to shear, when needed. no, not everyone can be trusted with power for the sole reason as how they see it & what it means to them (opening their ears or shutting ppl's mouths). present, involved, responsible ppl & nation - when that's nearly like an uncontrolled monkey with a grenade, you don't want to see & are more in comfort & need of a set back resource without a say & mind to say anything, made sure to be utilised as one pleases, not interested to advance to those ppl ... it's sort of sad. it's a cattle kept & made for a slaughter house to feed those in hunger for money & power - entire purpose & place of a nation, its ppl.

@Vinícius de A Batista are you asking what the Democrats are doing that republicans are against?? The number 1 thing that makes America what it is. Is the constitution. The other thing that makes America what it is. Is that it is a united group of 50 states. All with 50 smaller governments. And what is supossed to be a Federal government that is represented by the people. To serve the people. The constitution has the bill of rights. The first 10 listed amendments. This first 10 is a list of protections that the citizens have incase a tyrannical oppressive government tries to form. The DEMOCRATS are the party who is against the constitution. They want to remove 1st amendment and 2nd amendment protections. They keep trying to argue that they actually get to decide on a national level what speech is permitted. They silence opposition in the media. On social media. They make laws that attack other peoples religious beliefs. As a country we have the right to protect ourselves and others. We have the right to decide for ourselves what is the best way to protect and defend ourselves. Both these things were decided by the supreme court. And yet the DEMOCRATS are the ones trying to take away Gun rights. It drives them crazy that we actually have the right to defend ourselves with whatever means we choose. And that we can defend ourselves and our property. With lethal force. There are many on their side who are wanting this country to become a socialist government. Meaning they are totally fine making laws now that make theft and violence legal. They dont care that others have private property. And that our property is another thing protected by the Constitution. Those are the big things people have against them. The other issues people have is that they live in some dream world where they can tax the rich here and somehow come up with a way to pay for healthcare that is equal to what we have now for 330 million people. And say its gonna be free for the rest of us. They want to spend 40 trillion on top of that in the next 10 years. With a plan that will only generate 2 trillion in that time. And they dont understand that the rich and the big companies are just going to move and do their business anywhere else in the world to avoid paying 60% and 70% taxes. The democrats in california think they can tax big companies for 10 years after they left. that leave the state because of their high taxes. Again they cant. Because we are protected from that kind of a government by the constitution.

"Since when is this nation [the United States] center-right?" In global terms, U.S. politics is actually more definitively right-wing than center-right. The Democratic party--the left-most major political party with any substantial degree of power--is, in fact, center-right itself (in terms of the worldwide Overton window).

How on earth any democratic senator can look at how the republicans have blatantly gamed the system by literally any and every means possible to push through their own agenda and think "well, THIS time I'm sure they'll work with us in a completely fair and bipartisan way, we should reach across the aisle to make sure that their positions are represented as well" is fucking beyond me. It is now ridiculously clear that republicans will not play fair and cannot be trusted, and they have been expecting (and taking advantage of) the democrat's complacency/expectations that they will play by the rules; they have taken advantage of it to great success, and it needs to end. Democrats need to stop trying to work with republicans and start to fight them, because they sure as shit don't care about working with you.

Dave Chappell said no farmer should decide the fate of a black man or any minority for that matter. “They don’t know enough, they don’t know anything.” The majority of Americans are trying to move into the 21st century, but these backwater rubes, who’ve never been on a plane or met someone who doesn’t look like them keep us in the dark ages. The electoral college has allowed know nothings to take over this country and now we’re just propagating the idiocy of the masses. People who’ve never seen anything and live a sheltered life in a bubble shouldn’t be deciding the future of a highly diverse country. Not to mention, many of them are voting based on Facebook memes and conspiracy theories.

Prashant Wason

I mean, right now it's the exact same thing. The people deciding the president are the people staying in the swing states. My parents votes as blue voters in South Carolina for example, doesn't matter, because the state always votes red. Similarly, my republican uncle who stays in Cali, is vote also doesn't matter, because the state always goes blue. If you removed the ec and made it a popular vote, each vote from everywhere would be valuable and could turn the election. The whole few states argument is pretty bad, because that assumes states vote as a unanimous block. For example, in 2016, Hillary won California by 56% of the vote. This means that if they had a national popular vote system, 44% of 38 million - - 16.5 million votes would have gone to Trump. (those 16.5 million votes don't matter under the electoral college)
d. b
d. b 10 gün əvvəl

okay, one thing i see a lot when people yell about trump is that 1. he's going to get rid of democracy and 2. that he is a fascist and he will make america into a fascist government fascism is pretty easy to understand. it's a dictator. mr big-man at the top gets every say about everything. we've seen plenty of world life examples, from present and the past, but one big thing is control. a dictator wants to control everything a dictator would restrict the amount of news sites able to report, restrict television, restrict INFORMATION. a dictator would give anyone a chance to blast him on twitter or even give you access to something as connective as the internet at all. there are thousands of people that insult, threaten, wish death upon our "dictator", and he just la-de-dah's the fuck along, saying quirky shit that his "enemies" tear apart on a whim. trump is nowhere near a dictator. he doesn't have some master plan. if he had one, he would have started it the second he took office, the second he got access to the codes and the military. but go to russia and attempt to express lgbt+ tendencies and you could be imprisoned. go to certain other european countries and say something insulting about the monarchy or prime minister there and you could be jailed for 100 days. don't follow your emotions. don't let yourself be told what to be outraged by.

@Steve of the Dead john likely doesn't do his own scripts or research for the show, and probably didn't fit everything about transgender rights into his one, what, 30 minute show? not if he's adding in jokes every other few minutes. jk rowling, as far as i got from it, said that she didn't want to forget who the "true" women were (who give birth to their species, who suffer through menstration, and those born regular women), because they were important and shouldn't be grouped in and mixed with trans-women. just as "true" men shouldn't be grouped in and mixed with trans-women. identity is important, yes, but we can't ignore truths of biology (like trans-women can't have children, or menstrate, or probably shouldn't be let into olympic sports, because they can have physical, unfair advantages to "true" women and all that) we should take these things into account when helping support trans people. we can't overshadow the people who are born as something and remain that. we have to learn to find a nice middle-ground

can we add 3 states. Puerto rico, dc, and a conglomerate of pacific territories as one state. All three options have a higher frequency of men and women serving in the United States armed forces and have been under American control for around 100 years at least. Dc for the entirety of our existence. Aren't they Americans too

Keep in mind that DC had no representation until the 60s. Imagine not giving the capitol any say in congress or the presidential election. Sounds dumb doesn't it. Well, that's what the founding fathers did. The next time the republicans bring up how smart the founding fathers were with the electoral collage, you should bring up how stupid it is that they would create a national capitol without any representation.

Barret isn't that bad of a judge. She recuses herself from most cases involving her religion. And Ford's witnesses couldn't corroberate her story. And Brett Kavanaugh passed SIX FBI background checks. And finally, PR leans right.

Yes, thank you for talking about this. One person one vote is a myth in America. The electoral college was created to give southern slave owning states more power and we are still to this day shacked to that burden.

I’m going to ignore your very obvious stroke symptoms and instead skip to your obvious delusions. Do you have any evidence of voter fraud? Because for all it’s lawsuits, the Trump campaign hasn’t submitted a single piece of credible evidence, and has even made contradictory claims. For example, Trump claimed they didn’t have any observers in Pennsylvania, when that was demonstrably false (and was proven so, when the case was thrown out). But you just keep spouting your bullshit, same as you have for the last 4 years. Whatever helps you cope with Trump losing.

What truly pisses me off as a progressive is that the Republican's have the gall to talk about packing the courts when McConnell literally stole 150 lower court seats and the supreme court. That they say they represent the people when they're in the minority and most, if not all, progressive ideas are popular by wide margins. But what pisses me off even more, its the Democrats that don't have a spine. Say what you will about Lindsey Grahem and Cruz capitulating to Trump, they're getting their tax cuts, they're getting their justices, they're punishing the poor for being born poor and punishing minorities. Democrats, can't, do, shit. Obama was president for 8 years and had congress and the senate for two and the best he could do was a Republican health care plan, Romneycare. He tried to reach across the aisle Republican's spit on him. He picked a centrist judge and McConnell said fuck you. And the best (worst) part is, Biden is going to try to work with Republicans. He's going to crawl to McConnell, and ask 'Does this meet your approval sire?' and McConnell is going to smack him like a peasant because McConnell knows he has the power. They control the narrative and the Democrats are too weak to bare their teeth and fight back. Biden didn't bring up that Trump was impeached, or that only the tax cuts to the mega wealthy were permanent and unpaid for, or that the Taliban support him and Russia is interfering on his behalf, or that he prioritized a supreme court nominee over covid relief, or that Trump literally said, of 250 thousand dead people, 'it is what it is' and 'it affects virtually no one'. Democrats don't have what it takes to take Republicans to task because Democrats are just Republican-lite, and yet, progressives are force to eat shit and vote Democrat, because at least they might actually let me date who I want without getting kicked out of a fucking diner, and its sad that's pretty much the best I can hope for from Democrats. We need more Progressives.

Justice s aren't banned from having faith or morals or personal opinion s. Their job has nothing to do with their personal views. ACB will be fantastic due to her knowledge of the constitution and it's basis for being written. This is why we don't let entertainers become justices

She has the least experience of any justice, ever. She couldn’t name 5 freedoms of the 1st amendment. She has been placed on the Supreme Court for 1 purpose: to remove women’s right to their own bodies, and overthrow the will of the American people. Stfu Russian bot.

Look, Republicans are going to try to pack the court anyway. In fact, they have. So Dems might as well do it too. At least there'll be some semblance of balance. If they don't, all that's going to happen is that the GOP leans further and further right and the Democrats lean right too, because they're so desperate for both parties to get along. The fact is, fascism isn't a "difference of opinion". Racism isn't a difference of opinion. There is no middle ground. Either you strike it down or it flourishes. And the Republican party, as it stands, is past saving. They sold their souls when they decided to stand with Drumpf.
Timmy Carl
Timmy Carl 15 gün əvvəl
Good luck trying. Democrat had the chance when Clinton and Obama was in office. Now that republican has control of the court, it is nearly impossible. By the time they get there, the democrat would have lost most of there power.

It’s hilarious to hear one side in the states talk about the other side is being the ultimate evil. The Democrats use the rules every bit as much as the Republicans do. They are no better, They are no worse. The one thing I can agree with him on is that some change or do United States good. But only if both sides can put aside the ridiculousness and actually look out for the good of the country instead Of them selves. I don’t have a Lotta hope

I know its cool to hate on Joe Manchin for being a "fake" Democrat but have you seen West Virginia? Democrats do not play there and he's going to have to be dangerously close to a republican to defend the seat from an actual republican (WV is trump+35). Id rather have a vote I can count on sometimes instead of never.
